Volunteer Role Description
Position: Adopt a Tributary Volunteer
Purpose: Volunteering to help protect a section of a local river and making improvements to restore rivers and safeguard its wildlife.
Time commitment: Flexible (hours to suit volunteer)
Duties / Responsibilities:
- Conducting visual checks of rivers, to identify potential sources of pollution and reporting it to the relevant authorities.
- Wildlife monitoring and engaging with citizen science schemes, such as Riverfly, to build regular data on wildlife, offering river-health indicators.
- Litter picking – collecting litter found in and alongside rivers to help keep our waterways clean and pollutant-free.
- Habitat restoration – removing barriers, reconnecting floodplains, tree planting and fence installations.
- Tackling invasive species to help restore the natural ecological balance of the rivers and riverbanks.
Skills: Enthusiasm, willingness to learn and share knowledge, passionate about river health.
Training: Pollution identification, wildlife monitoring, recognising invasive plant species and carrying out safe removal.
