Programmes of walks designed to provide health and wellbeing

Hi, I'm Adam.

West Wales Walking for Wellbeing (WWWfW) project aims to develop and deliver a programme of ‘walking for wellbeing’ opportunities in West Wales that is community based, sustainable, and embraces a social prescribing model which seeks to connect to primary health care at a local level.

The Project is funded by the Healthy & Active Fund, a partnership between Welsh Government, Sport Wales and Public Health Wales and is active in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire.

West Wales Walking for Wellbeing is being delivered through a cross sector partnership including Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, Ceredigion Actif/Ceredigion County Council; Carmarthenshire Fifty Plus Forum (Walking Well Carmarthenshire); Hywel Dda Public Health Team and Snowdrop Independent Living in Haverfordwest.

The project offers:

· Programmes of walks designed to provide health and wellbeing benefits to those taking part

· Opportunities for collaborative working with GP practices and other community settings/assets e.g. local leisure centres and the National Exercise Referral Scheme

· Opportunities for volunteers to get involved as trained wellbeing walk leaders and support

· An approach to physical activity in the outdoors which seeks to be more inclusive through the use of mobility aides to improve accessibility and walking routes that are open to all

WWWfW offers programmes of walks designed to provide health and wellbeing benefits to those taking part at locations across West Wales.

The project works with GP practices and other centres in local communities to set-up walking programmes and sustainable ‘’walks for wellbeing’ groups, supported by local volunteers wherever possible.

West Wales Walking for Wellbeing is due to be completed as a funded project by March 2022. However, we envisage a legacy of community led, primary health care supported, walking opportunities across West Wales on completion of the funded work

The aspiration for the project is to develop a model that could be adapted and replicated across other regions in Wales, increasing the excellent value for money that well-designed walking initiatives are recognised to deliver.”
